Overview: Remediation of low-level radioactive waste and industrial waste contamination in urban settings within the Municipality of Port Hope, Ontario. The project included the remediation and renovation of small private properties and includes transporting impacted materials to the Port Hope Long-Term Waste Management Facility.

Project Details

The scope of the Port Hope Small-Scale Sites Remediation Package 3 project included the remediation of low-level radioactive waste and industrial waste contamination in urban settings within the Municipality of Port Hope, Ontario. The project included the remediation and renovation of small private properties and included transporting impacted materials to the Port Hope Long-Term Waste Management Facility (LTWMF).

Soil known to contain low-level waste was safely removed to the LTWMF and samples were collected and verification tested in accordance with remediation verification standard operating procedures. Building materials identified as being impacted by low-level waste were safely removed, and transported. Perma-Fix coordinated the disposal of various waste streams along designed routes to minimize community impact. Work was carefully performed with sensitivity to structures of cultural and community importance, and rehabilitating and reconstructing facilities in compliance with current building codes.
